Lord Of The Flies-Chapter 12 Cry of The Hunters
“End of Innocence”
Perspective: Ralph
Dear Journal,
Today was horrible. I could’ve been killed! I went to Castle Rock only to find out that Samneric were forced to join Jack’s tribe! They sent me away with a piece of meat, and I told them that I’ll hide in the nearby thickets. They decided they give me hints by ululations. It seemed like one of the twins was in trouble. They were being tortured and I could hear their screams. They found out where I was by torturing Sam or Eric. Knowing that it would be too hard to crawl through the thicket, they shoved rocks off Castle Rock. The rocks bounded, and I knew that I would die if I didn’t run. I thought running was good, but then changed my mind thinking they might want me to reveal myself through running out. I ran out after stabbing one of the savages. I don’t know if I killed him, but I had to run. They also tried smoking me out with fire, then I had to run again. I had to diddle them because their cordon of savages was going throughout the jungle hunting for me. Fortunately for me, I was saved. I saw the white drill and the shiny epaulettes on his shoulders. I saw distended bellies of kids behind me, and I was saved. I wept though, because I realized, I was no longer an innocent kid. We all revealed our dark side.

Lord Of The Flies; Chapter 11 – Castle Rock
1. In the beginning of the chapter, what does Piggy tell Ralph to do with the conch?
Piggy tells Ralph to blow the conch and call a meeting.
2. What reason will Piggy give Jack for the return of his glasses?
He will tell Jack that he should give the glasses back because it is right.
3. What does Ralph declare their appearance will be when they approach Jack?
He says they will go without paint or anything.
4. Who challenges the boys on their approach to Castle Rock?
Jack with a few other hunters.
5. When Jack appears, what has he been doing?
Jack was hunting.
6. What does Ralph call Jack that provokes a fight?
Ralph calls Jack a thief.
7. What happens to Samneric after the fight?
Jack has them tied up and forces them to join his tribe.
8. What is Roger doing during Piggy’s plea for a return to decency?
Roger is dropping rocks from Castle Rock.
I think that it is Roger who killed Piggy truculently. It was all Roger dropping rocks while being delirious. I think all of the savages thought of the conch as a talisman, because it reminded them of their time with Ralph and they hated Ralph. So I guess Roger couldn’t help but aim for Piggy since Piggy was just standing around, and was easy to hit. The cessation of dropping rocks happened when Piggy was hit, and the conch blown up.

Lord Of The Flies; Chapter 10 – The Shell And The Glasses
Dear Journal,
Simon’s death, there are many different perspectives on it. Like for an example, Ralph thinks it was pure murder. Simon agrees with him. He thinks that it was Jack’s fault. Simon thinks that Ralph has a good sense of what’s good and bad. Although Ralph thinks its murder, Piggy keeps saying it was an accident. How could it be? They stabbed and bit Simon for at least 5 minutes, enough to realize that it wasn’t anything else but Simon.
On the other side of the island, Jack was being a bit mean to his tribe. Although there is no explanation for why, Jack has had Wilfred tied up. They kept arguing about what happened at their feast. Jack kept saying that Simon was the beast in disguise. Simon though this was ludicrous. It was impossible that he could be the beast. Then he thought again about what the Lord of the Flies told him. He remembered the pig’s head saying that it was the beast and the beast was human nature. After thinking this through, Simon decided that Jack was partly right. The beast was in all of them, but like the Lord of the Flies said, “Fancy thinking the beast was something you could hunt or kill!”
He noticed Jack talking with Maurice and Roger. They were talking about fire, and how to make it. Jack started talking about invasion of Ralph’s tribe. Simon wished he could talk to Ralph and warn them about the upcoming attack. Unfortunately all he could do was watch. He watched as the three savages moved through the forest, stealthily, in the night. He gasped in horror when they arrived at the huts. Jack was grinning at the thought of disabling Ralph’s tribe to make fire. His goal was to snatch Piggy’s glasses then retreat. Simon was watching as Jack, Maurice, and Roger fought Ralph, Samneric, and Piggy. Simon was laughing and frowning as he saw Ralph beating Sam, because it was too dark to see who was who, and Jack and his group running away with a pair of broken glasses hanging in his hand.

Lord Of The Flies; Chapter 8-9 – “A Gift For The Darkness”, “A View To A Death”
Chapter 8
I think that Simon talking to the Lord of the Flies, is one of the weirdest parts of the book. “They were black and iridescent green and without number; and in front of Simon, the Lord of the Flies hung on his stick and grinned. At last Simon gave up and looked back; saw the white teeth and dim eyes, the blood-and his gaze was held by that ancient, inescapable recognition.” This is one of the most disturbing lines in the book. Just the thought of a pig’s head on a stick is very creepy. I found it interesting how William Golding explains the whole them of the book through a conversation of two characters. It explained what the beast really was, the evil of human nature. As the conversation Simon starts to faint, “Simon’s head wobbled. His eyes were half closed as though he were imitating the obscene thing on the stick. He knew one of his times was coming on.” The Lord of the Flies also threatens Simon, and he falls unconscious. I found all this disgusting, because of the descriptions William Golding used. “The pile of guts was a black blob of flies that buzzed like a saw.” He clearly depicts the remains of the pig, disgusting and horrifying.
Chapter 9
I think all of Jack’s tribe killed Simon. “At once the crowd surged after it, poured down the rock leapt on the beast, screamed, struck, bit tore.” This proves that it wasn’t just Jack, but his whole tribe. The underlined word says the crowd, which meant all of Jack’s hunters. “No! How could we-kill-it?” Again, it uses “we”, which shows that more than one person killed Simon. So even if Jack killed Simon, it wasn’t all him. Besides the hunters, I also think that another thing played a role in Simon’s death. I believe that the evil of human nature, played a role in Simon’s death.

Lord Of The Flies; Chapter 7 – Shadows and Tall Trees
“The Beast Appears”
“Simon”
Dear Journal,
Today we went on a hunt for the beast. Although I think the others found it, I had to go tell Piggy that they were coming back late. It was cool because Ralph hit a boar with his spear! Then the dun boys were doing their dance. We pretended that Robert was the pig and hit him with the butt end of our spears. After that we talked about doing it again, but Robert suggested we get a real pig because we have to kill it. Then Jack said, “Use a little’un!” then we all laughed. Although I thought it was funny, I think something is happening to Jack. Now a day, all he does is hunt, and kills. Maybe he wasn’t joking. Anyway the gullible boys decided to go up the mountain. Them being so gullible to believe there’s actually a beast that’s going to kill us. Then the bravado Jack goes up the mountain while I volunteered to go back to the huts. I actually wanted to go back to the huts, the brine from the sea was always spraying, and it hurt my eyes. The moors were muddy, but didn’t get me cold unlike the sprays from the sea. I hope those guys didn’t get hurt. It felt like rugger when we were playing around with Robert. Who knows how bad those guys can get hurt. Ralph seems to be the only sage one, while the others are impervious.

Chapter 6 - Lord Of The Flies - Beast From Air

Lord Of The Flies; Chapter 6 – Beast From Air
“Reckless Hunters”
“Piggy”
Dear Journal,
Everyone’s like little kids now! Oh, what would the grownups say! The mutinous hunters just want to kill anything! They don’t think and they just ran off hunting some beast! Flailing their arms and spears, it looked barbaric. Jack hasn’t even apologized for breaking my specs. Now I have one lens, which means I can only see with one eye! Sam ‘n Eric said that the beast had claws and scratched them. I don’t believe in such beast! I bet that those scratch marks are just from the branches of the trees in the woods. I think maybe the “beast” is a dead aviator. We still are in the war, and the ship we found might have been a war ship. Maybe there was a big fight while we were asleep. I’m starting to hate this island. Guano everywhere and talk about unrealistic beasts, from the water like a Leviathan! Besides I hate being with that waxy Jack! Has such a temper! I hope that he would cool down. He seems to have ran amok!

Lord Of The Flies; Chapter 5 - Beast From Water
![]()
Lord Of The Flies; Chapter 5 – Beast From Water
“Fear Causes Destruction”
Ralph
Dear Journal,
I believe that today was the worst day on the island. Jack left the fire out when a ship passed by for a stupid pig! So I called a meeting. I announced that the meeting was not for fun, but to make things straight. We talked about many things like how jobs weren’t getting done. We talked about how people said fresh water they will bring by a coconut shell, and they didn’t anymore. The lamentation was too much when we talked about the boy with a mulberry mark on his face. We think he’s dead. It seemed that the whole island was breaking up. I think it’s because of fear. We even talked about the “beastie” then this kid, Percival Wemsy Madison, he said the beast comes out of the water. I feel that all these concerns are very important. Unfortunately others don’t think so. Like the ludicrous idea of a beastie seems to annoy tempestuous Jack, He even got mad at the little ones for jeeringly playing, and not working. I was shocked! It felt like Jack’s personality has changed. It’s like he lives up to his incantation of killing pigs. It was barbaric the way he talked to the small ones, shouting at them just for being fearful. He didn’t even have the conch. He reminded me of what Simon said, “What is the dirtiest thing there is”, I think it is our nature to be selfish and fend for ourselves only.

Lord Of The Flies; Chapter 4 – Painted Faces and Long Hair
“The Kill”
Jack
Dear Journal,
Today I finally killed a pig! I cut its head off and blood spewed out of the body! Apparently though, Ralph wasn’t appreciative that I caught meat. Him and his fire. He doesn’t care that we catch meat! “We need shelters! We need to keep a fire going!” That’s all he says! Then there are those blatant little ones! They just play, eat fruit, then sleep! They don’t help at all! The fire went out, and a ship passed! So who cares! We needed meat! All I’ve had in days is those fruit and puny crabs with barely any meat! Then comes
Ralph with his belligerence, “We need a fire,” is what he says. That means we couldn’t catch a pig with people manning a fire. There wouldn’t be enough of us! I just feel like killing now a days, being annoyed and all. I feel like an actual hunter with my face painted. I feel like blood doesn’t scare me and instead I want more of it. That’s why I lead my hunters into chanting, “Kill the pig, cut her throat” it makes me feel wild. We feel like killing the pig malevolently, with out mercy. To me it’s like releasing all my frustrations on the pig. The swarthiness seems to be common now. I bet if we stayed here for years we’d eventually look like Africans. We all have long hair now, like we’re savages. Sometimes I think the “beastie” is the imagination of the little ones, where we turn into savages. The gouts of blood on our hands. I sometimes feel scared as well. I fear that we might kill ourselves. Everyone’s starting to act a bit stranger than when we came. I hope my fear doesn’t turn into reality.

Lord Of The Flies; Chapter 3 – Huts On The Beach
“Compassion and Fruit”
Simon
Dear Journal,
Today was probably the start of development here on the island. Everyone seemed to be working, for a few of us. It seemed that only I, Jack, and Ralph were working. We had two tasks, building shelters, and hunting. I expected some contrite faces after an hour or so but everyone just kept playing their games and swimming in the pool. Ralph and I were working on the 3rd hut, then Jack showed up. There seemed to be some compulsion to deny Jack. Both were in an argument whether the shelters go first or hunting. I think hunting is necessary, although I don’t see the reason to argue. Both had rapt faces. It seemed like the discussion could go on forever. I agree with Ralph about the fire, we need to maintain it’s smoke if we want to bee seen. If we don’t get rescued, I think things are going to get a bit scary around here. The vicissitudes of Jack and Ralph’s friendship is forming, who knows how much longer they’ll stay friends. The susurrations of the “beastie” aren’t over. We haven’t forgotten to the little boy with a mark on his face. Speaking of little boys, today I helped some out. They were too small to pick the ripe fruit of the trees. So I climbed up the mountain, and helped them out. I like to help people out, and I hate it when people don’t get along. So I hope things go well for Jack and Ralph.

Lord Of The Flies; Chapter 2 – Fire On The Mountain
“Flames Of Doom”
Piggy,
Dear Journal,
Today was one heck of a hectic day! Those errant boys! Acting like little kids running around! Ralph declares they need a fire on top of the mountain, and they run up like little kids! When they got all the wood, they pinched my specks to light the fire. Oh yeah there was also this kid with a mark on his face. He kept talking about some “beastie” which comes out at night. Ralph seemed a bit high strung about there not being a beastie. The small kid it looked like a snake and that it wanted to eat him. Ralph says it was a nightmare, but Jack said if they found it they’d kill it. Then both got into an argument until Jack induced Ralph to just play along. Then Ralph was wearing some martyred expression. At the top of the mountain they were capering about. Then Jack told me to shut up because he claimed that I didn’t help. Simon defended me though, he said I helped by sharing my specks. I think he’s a good friend. Then the fire got out of control and the flames spread to the forest. We noticed before the forest fire that little kids were down there, and we couldn’t find the kid with a mark on his face. I hope he’s ok. Well, that’s all for today.

Lord Of The Flies; Chapter 1 - Sound Of The Shell
Chapter 1 - Sound Of The Shell
“The Election”
Ralph
Dear Journal,
I am Ralph. Today my plane was shot down. It was frightening, but when I woke up I found myself on an island. I apparently wasn’t alone though, there is this fat kid. I don’t know his real name, but I call him Piggy. Anyway, there were no adults, so it was a bit scary. Then me and Piggy found this weird shell thing. He said it’s called a conch. Anyway we found that it can be used like a horn, and we blew it to see if anyone came to response. At first there were just a bunch of little kids, but then we met the choir group. Their leader was Jack Merridew. He was a bit skinny, but I don’t want to mess with him. It’s like he controls the choir, and they do everything he says. Both of us decided that there should be a leader. He wanted to be leader, and so did I. We took a vote, and as expected, Jack’s choir remained loyal to Jack by voting for him. Everyone else voted me, but Piggy seemed to doubt me and slowly raised his hand to vote. In the end I won, and suffusion formed in Jack’s face. So I gave him a proffer to be the leader of the choirs, which he wanted to be hunters. Among the children there was this kid named Roger who seemed a bit specious. He didn’t talk much and looked like a shady character. We were all joined in communion. It felt great to be like a tribe. The conch seemed to be like a source of power because of the mighty sound it makes, and anyone holding it as mighty as it is. Me, Jack, and Simon, who had a certain pallor and usually faints. Anyway, we went on an expedition to the top of this one mountain to confirm whether we were on an island or not. At the top of the mountain, we looked at the glamour of the sea surrounding the island. We saw a corral reef, and the scar where the plane, no longer to be found, crashed. All the adults must’ve been in the cabin during the crash, Piggy said he saw the front part of the plane go down in flames during the crash. SO that must’ve been why there aren’t any adults who survived. We had a splendid time on our expedition; we even found out that we could hunt pigs. Jack failed to kill one though. He looks a bit angry now that I think of it. I hope that he’ll have better luck next time. I think it was a wise choice for me to be chief. I will make sure that we will be rescued. And we ought to have some shelter too. Anyway that’s all for today I thought it was a great start!
